Blue Apron Review: The Original Meal Kit Ditched the Subscription — But Did It Fix the Box?

The recipes are still among the best in meal kits, and no-subscription ordering is a real win, but delivery reliability and customer service still drag the score down.

01 Why We Reviewed Blue Apron

Blue Apron created the American meal-kit category in 2012 and has spent the years since being out-discounted by HelloFresh and its sister brands. After food-hall and delivery company Wonder bought it for roughly $103 million, Blue Apron changed its business model. You no longer need a subscription. You can order individual meals à la carte, prices now reflect what each dish actually costs (a steak night costs more than a veggie bowl), and an optional Autoship & Save setting takes about 5% off recurring orders. The menu now has three formats: classic chef-style kits, quick Assemble & Bake meals, and single-serve heat-and-eat meals under the “Dish by Blue Apron” label.

The honest caveat: the menu and ordering model got better, but logistics still lag. Blue Apron’s Trustpilot score sits in the “Poor” range, and recent reviews keep repeating the same problems: late boxes, missing ingredients, tired produce and refunds paid as account credit instead of to the card. Blue Apron is worth ordering, but you should go in knowing those risks.

03 Honest Breakdown

✅ WHAT WORKS

  • No subscription required. This is the biggest change in years. You order when you want to, without skip-week reminders or cancellation hassles.
  • Recipe quality. The dishes taste chef-designed, and the recipe cards teach real techniques like pan sauces, compound butters and proper searing.
  • Fair pricing per dish. You no longer pay steak prices for a grain bowl. Cheaper dishes now actually cost less.
  • Three formats in one cart. Mix a full cook-from-scratch kit, a 10-minute Assemble & Bake tray and a microwave lunch in a single order.
  • Menu visibility. You can see menus about four weeks ahead, which helps with planning and budgeting.

❌ WHAT TO KNOW

  • Delivery and packing errors. Late boxes, missing components and soft produce are the most common complaints.
  • Customer service. Reviewers describe slow, scripted replies, and refunds often arrive as credits instead of cash.
  • Cook times. Classic kits often take 35–45 minutes, and some go past 50. They aren’t really weeknight-quick.
  • Shipping adds up. At roughly $11 per box, small one-off orders cost much more per serving unless you join Blue Apron+.

Overall, Blue Apron has the best recipes it has ever had and the friendliest ordering model, but delivery and service are still the weak spots.

04 Best Products

Best Overall Pick: Classic Signature Meal Kits (2-serving)

These are the heart of Blue Apron: seasonal, restaurant-style recipes with whole ingredients and detailed cards. They’re the best value if you enjoy cooking and want to get better at it.

Best Value: Dish by Blue Apron Prepared Meals

Single-serve, heat-and-eat meals at roughly $9–$12 each. They’re good for office lunches and solo dinners, and you can add them to a kit order so the shipping goes further.

Premium / Upgrade Pick: Premium & Steak / Seafood Kits

Steak, scallop and special-occasion kits cost more per serving, but they’re the dishes that make Blue Apron feel like a cheaper date night than a restaurant.

Approach With Caution: Assemble & Bake Trays

They’re convenient and quick, but they lose the cooking experience that makes Blue Apron stand out, and portion sizes draw mixed feedback. They work as an occasional add-on but aren’t a reason to choose Blue Apron.

05 What Buyers Are Actually Saying

Buyer praise

We have learned to expand our tastes and like the convenience of the kits.

Trustpilot reviewer
Buyer praise

The food has always been excellent and customer service the same.

Long-time Trustpilot reviewer
Buyer praise

Orders were missing ingredients and some missing the whole meals.

Trustpilot reviewer
Buyer praise

Customer service is zero help.

Trustpilot reviewer

The pattern: Customers like the food almost universally. When people complain, it’s about logistics: the box, the timing and the refund process. Very few complain about the recipes.
