Shinola was founded in Detroit in 2011 by Tom Kartsotis, a co-founder of Fossil. He revived an old American shoe polish name and built a lifestyle brand around Detroit's manufacturing pride. Watches are the core of the brand, hand-assembled in Detroit using Swiss and other imported components, but Shinola also sells leather goods, bicycles, audio and home products, and runs a hotel in Detroit. The Runwell is the flagship line from $595, while the Detrola starts around $395, and Mechanic, Canfield and Monster divers use Swiss Sellita automatic or manual-wind movements.
The honest caveat is value and marketing. In 2016 Shinola reached a settlement with the FTC over "Built in Detroit" claims, and it now says "Built in America" rather than "Made in America," since movements come from Switzerland and parts from Europe and Asia. Watch experts argue that $500–$3,000 is steep for mostly quartz watches when heritage brands like Hamilton or Bulova offer more for less.
